In the summer of 1958, John Cage (46) began teching a course in musical composition at the New School for Social Research, New York. His course brought together, as guest lecturers and pupils, a number of personalities who would be crucial to the development of what would later become known as Fluxus.

2 septembre: un EC-130 (avion de reconnaissance américain) est abattu en Arménie après avoir violé l'espace aérien soviétique, créant un incident diplomatique sans précédent.

18 September: Sputnik III is launched into orbit ("It weighed almost 3'000 pounds and the basic structure was similar to that of Sputnik I").

France: Importation du magnétoscope à usage professionnel, produit par la société américaine Ampex. A l'époque, ce matériel, très lourd, est principalement utilisé par les techniciens de la RTF (Radio Télévision Française).
